Dr.
James E. Henderson is Professor of Educational Leadership
in the Duquesne University School of Education. Jim served
as Dean of the School of Education from 1995 until 2003. During
that time, the School of Education experienced unprecedented
growth in student enrollment, in faculty scholarly productivity,
and in the number of new degree and certification programs.
From 1992 through 1999, he also was the founding Director
of Duquesne's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Educational
Leaders (IDPEL), the School of Education's first doctoral
program. In the seven years Jim had served as the program's
founding director, IDPEL received national and international
acclaim for the preparation of aspiring school superintendents
and other school leaders.
Prior
to his most recent posts, Jim served twenty-two years as a
schoolteacher and administrator, the last thirteen of which
were in the school superintendency. Jim took his Bachelors
degree in Social Psychology from Princeton University, and
his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Educational Administration
from Rutgers University.
Jim has authored numerous book chapters and scholarly and
professional articles, and most recently has attracted attention
for his work in teaming and shared decision-making, strategic
visioning and planning, leadership selection and development,
and collaborative bargaining. Jim has provided consulting
services in the areas of selection and development of leaders;
collaborative bargaining and conflict resolution; shared decision-making;
team building; and organizational planning and assessment.
His recent clients include over thirty universities, school
districts, non-profit organizations, businesses, and law firms.
Jim has
received numerous national and regional awards for educational
leadership and community service. Those recognitions include
selection as a Kellogg National Fellow, as a member of the
Executive Educator 100, as a member of the Golden Key National
Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society of Duquesne
University, as Honorary Inductee of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor
Society of Duquesne University, as the recipient of the Order
of Omega "Apple Polishing Award" from the Duquesne
University Sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha. Jim also received the
Paul L. Varnum Award from the Three Rivers - University of
Pittsburgh Chapter XIV of Phi Delta Kappa, the Faculty Award
for Excellence in Scholarship from the Duquesne University
School of Education, and the Outstanding Research and Publications
Award from the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and
Curriculum Development. He also was chosen as Superintendent
of the Year by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association
for outstanding advocacy of music instruction in the schools,
as Pennsylvania Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania
Jaycees, and as the Pennsylvania Friend of Home Economics
Award recipient.
Jim currently
is an active member of the boards of Leadership Pittsburgh,
Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania, the Agenda to
Promote Educational eXcellence (APEX) Inc., Vincentian Academy--Duquesne
University, and South Hills Country Club. He is also Chairman
of the Board of Governors of The Rivers Club, and is Co-Chair
of the Research and Development Committee of the Pennsylvania
Association of School Administrators (PASA) and a member of
the PASA Board of Governors. Jim was also elected to membership
in Amen Corner of Pittsburgh in 2003. |
